HIV Infections in Children Drop Significantly

38 Percent Fewer Cases Since 2015

UNAIDS Reports Progress in Fight Against Pediatric HIV

The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) has announced a significant decline in HIV infections among children under the age of 14. Since 2015, new cases have dropped by an impressive 38 percent.

This progress is a result of targeted programs aimed at preventing vertical transmission, the passing of HIV from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding. UNAIDS attributes the success to increased access to treatment for mothers and children, as well as efforts to educate and empower women.

Despite the positive trend, the fight against pediatric HIV is far from over. The report notes that the number of children receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) is still below target, with 52% of infected children receiving treatment in 2023.

UNAIDS calls for continued efforts to reach the remaining children in need and to ensure access to lifesaving medications. The organization also emphasizes the importance of addressing the social and economic factors that contribute to HIV transmission, such as poverty and gender inequality.
