Buenos Aires, Argentina - Lionel Messi scored his first goal of the 2024 Copa América as Argentina defeated Canada 2-0 in the semi-final on Sunday, July 9th. The defending champions will now face the winner of Brazil and Ecuador in the final on July 16th.

Striker Julián Álvarez gave Argentina the lead in the 28th minute, tapping in a rebound after a shot from Messi was parried by Canadian goalkeeper Milan Borjan. Messi doubled the advantage just before halftime, converting a penalty kick after he was brought down in the area by defender Alistair Johnston.

Canada fought hard in the second half, but they were unable to find a way past the solid Argentine defense. Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez made several key saves to preserve the clean sheet.
